INTRODUCTION

The Secondary School programme : Key Stage 3 which covers years 7, 8 and 9.

Pupils in Year 7 are now in Key Stage 3 and beginning Secondary School. The environment is slightly different and they will be learning in a different way. They no longer have a class teacher but a series of subject teachers and instead of remaining in one classroom all day they move about from subject to subject. They therefore have to be more organised now and in addition to these changes they will now receive regular homework. They also need to be well organised at home.


MATHS

Typically the new school year will start with revision of the work completed at Primary School. The new teachers will want to establish levels in all subjects. This should be a short process after which the pupils will progress to more advanced work in algebra, handling data and measurement.

ENGLISH

At Key Stage 3 this will include such topics as: writing a speech, comprehension focussed on famous figures such as Winston Churchill, Madame Curie or Shakespeare. They will develop their creative writing skills with such topics as, cartoon writing and short stories.

At this level the pupils should have established their routines for work at both school and home. Homework will play a large part going forward from this point as a reinforcement of work covered in the classroom. It is of great importance that all consignments are completed timeously as this forms an integral part of the teacher’s ability to evaluate and remediate if necessary.

Pupils are growing in confidence and many will begin to think about subject choices and career pathways.


MATHS

This will incorporate: handling of data, ratio, proportion, formulae, sequences and the nth term. End of year exams are more formal and require good time management.

ENGLISH

Work is quite diverse at this stage with a greater emphasis on English literature. However spelling and good use of grammar will continue to be important.

By Year 9 pupils will be working across a range of levels. All will be considering their subject choices for Year 10 and 11 when they will write their IGCSE Cambridge Board exams. By the end of this year those choices must be made. There will be counselling for pupils in order to help them make the correct choices. Academically there will be a review of all work completed in all subjects for Years 7 and 8.


MATHS

Maths at this level includes work on sequences, ratio and proportion as well as more advanced algebra and considerable preparation for exams. They will need to practise working quickly and effectively to complete examination papers in time and with few mistakes. Emphasis will be on understanding questions fully before starting to answer them. We will work on past-papers so that pupils understand the format and what is expected of them.

ENGLISH

The Shakespeare plays and set texts will be studied this year. Various forms of writing will be introduced such as writing a critique about a specific author. There will be project work to be completed at home. As with all other exam subjects the pupils will study past-papers in order to familiarise themselves with the format and time management.
